Currently all (perhaps most if there’s a new hire) of our osteopaths are trained in dry needling, a therapeutic technique used by healthcare professionals, such as physical therapists, chiropractors and osteopaths, to treat musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. It involves the insertion of thin, solid needles (similar to acupuncture needles) into specific trigger points or tight bands of muscle tissue to relieve pain and improve mobility. Here's a more detailed explanation of dry needling:
How Dry Needling Works:
Assessment: Before performing dry needling, the healthcare provider assesses the patient's musculoskeletal condition, identifies trigger points, and determines the appropriate needle insertion points.
Needle Insertion: The practitioner inserts a fine needle directly into the trigger point or tight muscle band. The needle is typically inserted through the skin and into the muscle.
Stimulation: The practitioner may perform various techniques with the needle, such as gentle twisting or tapping, to stimulate the trigger point or muscle. This can cause a local twitch response, which is a brief involuntary muscle contraction.
Needle Removal: After a short period (usually a few seconds), the needle is removed.
Key Points about Dry Needling:
No Medication: It's called "dry" needling because no medication or solution is injected through the needle. The treatment relies on the mechanical and neurological effects of needle insertion.
Local Twitch Response: The local twitch response is considered a positive outcome during dry needling. It is thought to release muscle tension and improve blood flow to the area, which can help reduce pain and promote healing.
Conditions Treated with Dry Needling:
Dry needling is commonly used to address a variety of musculoskeletal issues, including:
Muscle Pain: It can help alleviate muscle pain and tension, especially in cases of myofascial pain syndrome.
Joint Pain: Dry needling may be used in conjunction with other therapies to address joint pain caused by muscle imbalances or dysfunction.
Sports Injuries: Athletes often receive dry needling to manage sports-related injuries and improve muscle function.
Chronic Pain: It may be used as part of a pain management strategy for chronic conditions like fibromyalgia.
Headaches: Dry needling can be effective in reducing tension-type headaches or headaches related to muscle tension in the neck and shoulders.
Back Pain: It is sometimes used to address back pain related to muscle spasms or trigger points.
It's important to note that dry needling should only be performed by trained and licensed healthcare professionals who have undergone specialised training in the technique. The effectiveness of dry needling can vary depending on the individual and the specific condition being treated. Some people experience immediate relief, while others may require multiple sessions for significant improvement. As with any medical intervention, it's essential to discuss the potential risks and benefits with a qualified healthcare provider before undergoing dry needling treatment.
